The Assessment of Thyroid Function by T-3 Resin Sponge Uptake Test Using Triosorb I-125 Kit
Chung Tay-Joong

Abstract
The uptake of 125-I triodothyronine from serum by a resin sponge was determined using Triosorb I-125 kit in 127 cases with various thyroidal states. The results of which were compared with those of 24 hour thyroidal 131I uptake values measured in 119 cases.
The principle was based on the measure of the degree of thyroxine-biniding protein employing I-125 labeled triodothyronine and an ion-exchange resin.
Following were the results:
1) The mean values of T-3 uptake were 32.2¡¾4.4% in 15 normal persons. 34.2¡¾6.3% in 29 nontoxic nodular goiter and 35.8¡¾6.5% in 24 nontoxic diffuse goiter cases. The mean value of these 68 euthyroid cases was 34.3¡¾6.2%. The mean value in 53 hyperthyroid cases was 50.2¡¾11.6%, while that in 6 hypothyroid cases was 21.8¡¾7.4%.
2) The mean values of 24 hour thyroidal 131I uptake were 27.1¡¾13.2% in 1 euthyroid cases, 60.8¡¾ 18.2% in 52 hyperthyroid cases and 18.1¡¾8.2% in 6 hypothyroid cases.
3) The diagnostic compatibility of T-3 test in euthyroid, hyperthyroid and hypethyroid cases were 73.9%, 91.6% and 66.7% respectively, that of overall cases was 81.5% while was 72.3% with 24 hour thyroidal uptake value.
4) It is confirmed that T-3 test shows higher accuracy and outstanding advantage of not being affected by iodine-containing compounds than those of conventional methods in various thyroidal states.
